Whale Sharks | Cancun, Isla Mujeres & Holbox
PROBABILITY OF ENCOUNTER
The Mexican Caribbean for several months a year holds the largest congregation of whale sharks in the world. A banquet of snapper eggs in the middle of the ocean becomes a beacon to hundreds of whale sharks, giant mantas and mobula rays. The season usually starts in late May and ends in early September. During June and July it is common to see more than a hundred boats visiting. For this reason, if you want to avoid the crowds we suggest you visit early June or early August.
We recommend you fly into Cancun and stay either in Cancun or Isla Mujeres. You can also stay in Holbox, a small town off the beaten path; however you will most likely have to endure longer boat rides or green water. During May through August the sea is usually flat, if bad weather does roll in (extremely rare) it might be difficult to spot the large congregation of whale sharks in blue water.
